Wisdom Tooth Extractions

They are the last teeth that erupt in the mouth, coming in sometimes around 17 years of age. Some patients are lucky enough to not develop wisdom teeth at all, though this is rare. Rarer still, are those who have wisdom teeth erupt correctly and have no complications as they enter the oral cavity.

The vast majority of patients develop wisdom teeth which erupt with complications. Some of these complications include causing tooth misalignment. In some cases, wisdom teeth can remain impacted which simply means they never fully erupt in the oral cavity and remain partially hidden in the jawbone. This can cause pain in the jaw and make chewing difficult.

Any patients suffering from jaw pain and who think they might have impacted wisdom teeth should contact Capitol Square Dental to schedule an appointment. We are available to answer questions and provide guidance with regard to our patient's treatment.

Eruption of Wisdom Teeth

For the vast majority all patients, the wisdom teeth begin to erupt during the late teen years. The good news is for those patients who have been coming in for twice-yearly examinations we have been tracking the wisdom teeth and watching them as they get closer to erupting. Using x-rays, we can easily track their progression. By keeping an eye on them we are ready to extract them if they begin to show signs that they will not erupt correctly.

When a patient's mouth is too small to support the number of teeth, wisdom teeth will become impacted. It might be a partial eruption, which means a small section of the tooth is visible or the tooth might never break through and remain embedded in the jawbone. When this occurs, it is important to remove the tooth before it causes disruption to the rest of the teeth in the oral cavity.

Why Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

When wisdom teeth fail to erupt, they will still try to break through even when there is no available space for them. They seek the easiest route with the least resistance. In some cases, this means they can come in at an angle, and in other instances they can try and come in through the roof of the mouth. When the wisdom teeth are not removed in a timely fashion, they can cause teeth to become misaligned and even cause temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, which is pain in the jaw.

Is Wisdom Tooth Removal Painful?

While tooth extraction may cause some anxiety, we leverage modern anesthesia techniques to ensure patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. Local anesthesia numbs the extraction site, and sedation options such as nitrous oxide or intravenous sedation can help you relax further during the procedure. We will provide you with aftercare instructions, as well as medication as needed for relief as your mouth heals.
