Teeth CleaningMaintaining a presentable set of teeth is not as easy as having them. To keep that smile fresh and continually bright, there is a need for regular preventive care. Having professional dental cleanings is a great way to care for your oral health and reduce dental problems as much as possible. When tartar builds up over time and is left unchecked, they become homes for harmful bacteria that can cause problems for the teeth and gums over time. At Capitol Square Dental, we offer professional cleanings as preventive dentistry for our patients to help remove the harmful deposits from the tooth surfaces. Types of CleaningsDental cleanings are a lot more than just brushing and flossing our teeth. It is a professional dental service that completely removes the deposits of plaque or tartar that your toothbrush would not normally get at. Dental cleanings are of three types. There is prophylaxis cleaning, scaling, and also gross debridement. Each type is performed in different ways and are done for different causes. Although, the underlying aim of all these types of cleanings is to achieve cleaner and healthier teeth, it is great to know why they are done. Prophylaxis or Routine CleaningThe routine cleaning is done for healthy patients who only require routine maintenance and check up to keep their oral health in top form. Patients who get prophylaxis cleaning already have healthy teeth. When we perform the prophylaxis cleaning, our professionals carefully clean the teeth by removing all of the stains and plaque, going deeper for the hardened ones that are called calculus. This way, we eliminate the chances of toxins affecting the teeth and reduce the chances of unseen problems. Usually, this type of cleaning should be done at least twice a year to ensure that plaque does not build up. ScalingScaling is also known as deep cleaning, and it is done with root planing. When patients have plaque that has gathered over time, it hardens into calculus and raises the risks of gum disease or more severe dental problems. Deep cleaning and root planing is often a procedure for patients with increased chances of gum disease. When patients have bleeding or swollen gums, or other signs of gum disease, then root planing is needed. With scaling and root planing, the hardened plaque is carefully cleaned off from the root of the teeth or other surfaces. Gross DebridementFor patients who have not been to our office in more than a year, there is always a chance that hardened plaque has built up on the surface of their teeth. These types of patients often require a gross debridement. A gross debridement is usually carried out to determine whether there are any dental issues. Sometimes, they are done to see if there are issues that were not noticed by the patient before a dental cleaning. Our professionals will remove all tartar buildup on the teeth and gums to be sure of your dental health.
