Sports Guard

Athletic man ready to play a game with a sports guard from Capitol Square Dental Sports can be very active. We will worry about safety and get items such as helmets and knee pads. Oftentimes, we forget about our mouths and what is inside there. This is where mouth guards come to play. If you or your child is into a contact sport, then you will realize how important mouth guards are. To protect our patients' smiles at Capitol Square Dental, we help patients prepare for their athletic activities by getting mouth guards that are fitted specifically for them.

What are Mouth Guards?

Mouth guards are dental appliances worn mostly on the top row teeth to help prevent oral injuries. Athletic mouth guards are also known as sports guards and are used to protect the teeth and gums while playing or during active sport sessions. As it protects you from cut lips, broken teeth, or other oral injuries, a comfortable sports guard is a great investment that can reduce dental emergencies during a sports game. Sports guards are often worn on the top row teeth, but you might require one for your lower row teeth if you have braces or dental appliances fixed there.

Types of Sports Guards

Getting sports guards is a fairly easy task. Although, there are a few things to consider when getting one. The sports guard should be comfortable as well as durable. It should also fit easily, without the risk of falling out easily. Furthermore, it should not impede breathing and talking, and it must be easy to clean. With these in mind, there are three types of sports guards available. There is the Stock sports guard, the boil and bite, and also the custom-fit guard.

Stock Sports Guards

These types of sports guards have already been pre-formed. Usually found at stores that sell sporting goods, they are ready to wear. Since they are mass-produced, they are often made of weaker materials and can tear easily. Also, they are made in one size, so you run the risk of having them too loose or too tight, making it difficult to talk or even breathe when wearing them. They are fairly cheap and are better than nothing, but our professionals do not recommend them.

Boil and Bite Sports Guards

These sports guards are made in a shape that can be reformed. To use them, you simply boil the mouth guard in water, and then you bite into the softened guard so it can mold to your teeth for fit. This way you can get a more fitting guard over your teeth than the stock option. Usually, they can be purchased at drug stores or they can also be fitted at a dental office.

Custom-fit Sports Guards

These types are made for you or your child with special materials in our office. Using recommended materials that are safe, we customize the sports guard to your teeth. Hence, you get the best level of comfort and protection. Their durability and effectiveness will help protect your child from potential injuries.

If you are ready to get a mouth guard for you or your child, Capitol Square Dental is best equipped for your custom-fit guards. Reach us at (380) 383-3497 to schedule your appointment with us.
