Periodontal Care

Diagram of gum disease from Capitol Square Dental The gums are a very important part of our teeth, and having healthy gums also contributes to good oral health. With reference to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over 47% of Americans above 30 have periodontal disease. So, to avoid being a part of these statistics, it is imperative that we take periodontal maintenance and care seriously. Capitol Square Dental provides periodontal maintenance and care for patients with gum disease and symptoms. This article provides more information about gum disease and how helpful periodontal maintenance is.

Types of Gum Disease

Gum disease generally begins with the collection of bacteria in the mouth in the form of plaque. When plaque keeps building and is not removed, bacteria also grow affecting the gum and eventually your oral health. Typically, there are two types of gum disease. They are gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis

Also known as gum inflammation, gingivitis is often triggered by bacterial infection. It is the mildest form of gum disease. Normally, it presents as swollen gums. The gums are often red and can bleed easily. While these may sound scary, it brings the patient almost no discomfort. This is why it could easily get ignored. Gingivitis is usually caused by poor oral hygiene. Smoking, aging, inadequate nutrition, and substance abuse are some of the factors that can contribute to the development of gingivitis. Sometimes, diabetes, HIV infection, hormonal changes or some strong recommended medications can also trigger gingivitis. Thankfully, it is easily reversed with professional dental treatment.

Periodontitis

When gingivitis is left untreated, it could grow into periodontitis which is a more serious form of gum disease. At this point, plaque and tartar have spread below the gum line, releasing bacteria and toxins that irritate the gums. The toxins weaken the tissues and bones that support the teeth and might eventually get them destroyed. When the gum tissues get too weak to support the teeth, they can lead to tooth and bone loss. Periodontitis can present in different ways, especially with patients that are clinically healthy.

Periodontal Maintenance

To eliminate the chances of gum disease, we recommend periodontal maintenance. Periodontal maintenance is a cleaning routine that involves the removal of tartar and bacteria from the teeth surface and gum line. It also goes as far as the roots of the teeth. Since bacteria are a strong cause of gum disease, periodontal maintenance plays a strong role in eliminating them by preserving the outcome of your deep cleaning or even periodontal surgery.

Who Should Get Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance and care are very important for patients who have been treated for gum disease. Since plaque can always gather again on the surface of the teeth, it is strongly recommended to keep up maintenance appointments as well as healthy oral hygiene. These regular visits with us will help us ensure that all plaque and tartar are removed. Periodontal maintenance is needed to ensure that chances of gum diseases are drastically reduced.

Depending on the severity of the initial gum disease, you could need as many as four appointments in a year. To get more information about periodontal care or possible symptoms of gum disease, please reach us at Capitol Square Dental at (380) 383-3497 to schedule a consultation appointment.
